Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Bowery Ballroom, 5-31-14
The Brooklyn based Soul/Blues/Funk band played the first of two nights at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night. They were also part of the Concert For Scotty benefit for Simon Scott on Sunday.
I was looking forward to this show. After listening to the band on various music streaming sites I knew I would be stopping by the merch table to pick up a cd (Unfortunately they didn’t have any vinyl).
The night started with duo Paris Monster. They had the growing crowd dancing to their electronic soul grooves.
Then, Sister Sparrow, aka Arleigh Kincheloe was joined by her Dirty Birds, a seven-piece band that rocked the house. By this time the place was packed. The Dirty Birds are a family affair with big brother Jackson on harmonica and cousin Bram on drums. These guys really know how to rock. I heard their live shows were explosive, and they really lived up to it! The 3 piece horn section really funked the place up. Unfortunately one of them is flying the coop to pursue a law degree. If you get a chance, I would check them out at one of their few upcoming “local” shows. They’re playing Mountain Jam in Hunter Mountain, New York and The Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ before heading out across the country.
