The surfer/singer-songwriter played Brooklyn Bowl Wednesday evening. As a fan of Jack Johnson, I had to see Donavon live. Johnson served as a musical mentor to Frankenreiter, and actually signed him to his first record deal.
The evening started with Tom Curren’s solo act. He played guitar while keeping time with his bare feet on a snare drum and tambourine, while also occasionally playing harmonica.
When Donavon took the stage the place was jumping and the energy was electric. His feel good, surfer music had everyone dancing. The sound was amazing, coming from only three musicians. His hour and a half long set contained his hits “Move Yourself” and “Free”, but my personal favorite was “It Don’t Matter”. For this closer, he brought up various people from the crowd to help him out on vocals.
