INGRID MICHAELSON BRINGS HOLIDAY CHEER TO WEBSTER HALL

While the snow began to fall in NYC for the first time this winter, Ingrid Michaelson kept a sold-out crowd heated inside for her 2014 Holiday Hop. It was the Eighth Annual Holiday Hop apparently and Ingrid and her team made sure festivities were in the air with holiday décor all over the stage and a custom designed green and red holiday dress for the master of ceremonies herself. Like her show at SummerStage a few months back, local rockers Secret Someones opened the night’s festivities. If you’ve never heard of them you’re missing out, as they’re a thrilling upcoming pop-rock group that just released their first video to single ‘I Wont Follow’.

Starting out the night with both newer and older songs in “Home” from Lights Out, “Maybe” from 2009’s Everybody, and the 2011 single “Parachute,” Ingrid made it clear that she was ready to throw one hell of a holiday party for everyone. The night was full of up-tempo dance tunes from her indie-pop catalog showcasing her career evolution that’s gone from coffeehouse favorite to having a presence on the top-40 pop charts.

“I realize I’ve written a lot of cute songs. When people come up and remind me though, I wanna puke… Well this one’s one of the cutest!” She said with a laugh before going into fan favorite “You and I” and then “Be Okay,” which you’ve definitely heard on those cute puppy chow commercials.

Of course no holiday hop is complete without some holiday songs, which included an impressive version of “Mele Kalikimaka” with top-notch harmonies provided from her backing band and the always awesome Bess Rogers from opening act Secret Someones. Follow that up with the beautiful piano ballad ‘Winter Song’ co-written with good friend Sara Birelles and a wild holiday medley including the awesome dreidel song to put everyone in the holiday mood.

Towards the end of her set she pounded out the hits including “The Way I Am” and “Girls Chase Boys,” which seemed to be an apparent favorite of Perez Hilton, who couldn’t help but dance his way around the VIP area next to us. She was even joined by Ian and Chad from A Great Big World on “Over You.” After closing out with her new signature anthem “Afterlife”, she came back out for a one-song encore with a warm tribute to her late mother’s favorite Christmas song “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.”
