ARIEL PINK PLAYS A SHORT SET AT T5

Waltzing on stage in platform maroon heels covered in shiny silver spikes, Ariel Pink, and his band of colorful characters (his drummer wore a teal bikini and a cowboy hat and his guitarist had some kind of multicolored stickers freckling his face), opened the show at Terminal 5 Wednesday night with, “White Freckles.”

Right when he took the stage, Ariel announced that he wasn’t feeling well and apologized for the lack of energy that may occur throughout the show.

Ariel Pink followed a weird, ultra-intimate, performance by Jack Name involving the three band members sitting/standing uncomfortably close to one another in a semi circle while they played synth-heavy and lyric-lite tunes. Needless to say, whatever lack of energy Ariel had during his performance was better than what came before him.

I think the burger that got delivered to him on stage right before “Jell-o” helped give him an extra boost to get him through his performance. Ariel’s almost hour-long set consisted mostly of songs from his latest solo album pom pom including “Black Ballerina,” my favorite, “Put Your Number in My Phone,” and ended with “Picture Me Gone.”

Ariel Pink and his band put on an eclectic, circus of a concert that got everyone dancing and wanting more. Even though Ariel was too sick to come back out for an encore, his performance throughout the show was a treat in itself.
