It’s the return of the Daphne Blue Fender Stratocaster! The guitar, infamous as the go-to axe for the alternative set in the early 90s, makes a cameo in the video for Monogram’s “Backwards,” helmed by Ian Jacobs. “Backwards” — with it’s arpeggiated notes over muddled fifths—recalls those power pop bands like Weezer, but with the influence of the electronic rock of Beck and Phoenix.
The single comes off Monogram’s Fader EP, and is set to release on June 26th. He will be performing at the Glasslands Gallery in his native Brooklyn the next day to celebrate. After you watch the video, you can head over to his bandcamp (http://monograms.bandcamp.com) to hear additional track “Tidal Wave.”
The video itself is sparse, just Jacobs behind colored glass, and it might as well be. For a one man band—what else do you need? (see: “Easy/Lucky/Free”). Check it out here first at Pancakes & Whiskey.
