Mermaids and many other seafaring creatures packed Lot 45 in Brooklyn Thursday night. They gathered for a good cause. It was the Mermaid Lagoon Ocean Benefit: Sea Ice.
Organized in part by singer/artist Kai Altair and the Mermaids of NYC, the 5th Annual show raised money for Hudson Riverkeeper, and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation, an organization dedicated to the protection and humane treatment of cetaceans throughout the world. The event was co-produced with Dr. Debra Tillinger (climate change educator at the American Natural History Museum) and Ali Luminescent (one of the official “Mermaids of Coney Island”).
The show featured entertainers, musicians and fire dancers, as well as supporters dressed in a variety of mermaid, pirate and other sea creature costumes. There was a Parade of the Ice Mermaids to decide the Best Winter Mermaid Costume. Capping off the night was a performance by Kai Altair. For more info on Kai, check out her website.
