Take Me to the River, is a movie that premiered at the 2014 SXSW Film Festival. According to their website, it highlights the intergenerational and interracial musical influences of Memphis by following them through the creative process of recording a historic new album, to re-imagine the utopia of racial, gender and generational collaboration of Memphis in its heyday. Featuring Terrence Howard, William Bell, Snoop Dogg, Mavis Staples, Otis Clay, Lil P-Nut, Charlie Musselwhite, Bobby “Blue” Bland, Yo Gotti, Bobby Rush, Frayser Boy, The North Mississippi All-Stars and many more.
Many of these stars were on hand at Brooklyn Bowl Wednesday night. There was a short movie trailer where Snoop Dogg compared these youths being taught by such legends to being coached by Michael Jordan.
The “house” band for the night was the Hi Rhythm Section. It consisted of musicians, most of which have recorded with Al Green. Other guests included The Royal Memphis Horns led by Ben Cauley, the sole survivor of the plane crash that killed Otis Redding and four members of the Bar-Kays. Rounding out the all-star group was William Bell, Bobby Rush, Otis Clay, with some rapping by Frayser Boy and Al Kapone and backing vocals provided by the Norman Sisters. The finale was, of course, “Take Me to the River,” where Talking Heads keyboardist Jerry Harrison joined everyone who performed throughout the night. It was a great night with nothing but positive vibes. Shows were limited, but if they decide to continue to tour I would definitely check it out.
