I hit up The Studio At Webster Hall on Friday to check out Matty Rico, a hip-hop artist from Chicago who’s smooth delivery was a treat to hear.
Like any other hip-hop show, there were numerous acts that started the early night, each with a different flavor. First up was Jersey bred Johnny JC who came out with some straight forward rap.
Next up was an energetic set by Matty Carter & Ariel that took it up a notch with a guest MC and a drummer, that had everybody dancing around.
Straight out of Jersey City was Vincent, The Owl – a throwback hip-hop collaborative in the Wu-Tang style that featured a funny and easy-going style. Not unlike Wu-Tang, there were many dudes on stage just drinking or dancing.
Last up (for me, as there’s a flu going around) was Matty Rico, straight out of Chicago. Matty Rico is a star, you just don’t know it yet as he effortlessly owned the stage while sauntering and spitting intelligent lyrics. While the lyrics were smart, they had a definite edge, one that can reach to many different people while still holding some grit and street cred. He also touted the best DJ of the night that combined killer dance grooves with hammering bass lines.
