Wednesday was probably one of the warmest days New York City has had so far this year, it’s no wonder the audience was a bit sparse at the Studio at Webster Hall that night – everyone was trying to find a rooftop to drink cocktails on. Little did those rooftop lovers know, they missed out on what was a great show filled with a rock vibe from multiple decades and a jamming headlining set by The Relationship.
Opening the night was Jeremy and the Harlequins – a group of five guys who looked like they came straight out of Grease with their slicked back hair, leather jackets, and rolled up jeans that showed off their white socks and loafers. Not only did their look bring me back to the 1950’s, so did their style of music. The way lead singer, Jeremy Fury, danced with the microphone reminisced Elvis Presley and the swinging beat of their songs made me want to put on a poodle skirt and twirl.
Gringo Star was the complete opposite of the Harlequins. They whipped their long, scraggly locks around the stage and had a dirty sound, more reminiscent of the late 60’s rock era. I wish I was listening to them at an outdoor venue because that would have been so epic!
“It’s a long way from California. Where do you guys even surf here?” said The Relationship’s, Jon LaRue, about New York City as they came out on stage. He went on to say that they were going to show us what true rock and roll was and how to appreciate the art of music.
Singer Brian Bell (of Weezer) let out his dreamy vocals throughout the set especially in “Please Help Me” and “Young Temptations,” the latter of which is the B-side to their recently released single through Burger Records. “Something More” and “You Rock My Heart” both have a bluesy vibe that really got me hooked into the song. They ended the night with the A-side of their single, “Oh Allen,” which is catchy and danceable and is bound to be a big hit at the summer beach parties – definitely my favorite of the night.
