As summer inches ever so closer, concert season is nearly in full swing and we think it’s about time. Here are our Pancake Picks, for best shows of the week via doNYC.
Monday
Domino Kirke @ Baby’s All Right – We met with Domino a little over a month ago on her return to showbiz with a new collaboration album with Luke Temple. The incredibly talented daughter of Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke starts her three-week residency at Baby’s, with this album release party.
Tedeschi Trucks Band @ Central Park SummerStage – Anytime of the best guitarists on the planet comes to your town to play a show under the warm skies in Central Park, you should probably plan on attending. Trucks brings his slide wizardry to Rumsey Playfield to help kick off the festival’s thirtieth season.
The Spring Standards @ Mercury Lounge – They’re an Americana trio based around acoustic musical foundation and harmonic chemistry. Mixing different pop varieties to their folk based songwriting style, they’re also not afraid to turn it up a notch a get a little louder on occasion.
Tuesday
Drowners @ Brooklyn Bowl – Somewhere in between the tempo of punk and new wave, Drowners bring their crunching guitars and fast-fueled tunes to Brooklyn Bowl. Capturing a post-punk sound and style with songs barely grazing the three-minute mark, it’s their mix of cool riffs and vocal hooks that will keep you dancing all night.
Violent Femmes @ Rough Trade – Pick up the legendary band’s new album at Rough Trade, Happy New Year, and get automatic entry to what is a great live show with tons of energy with sing-alongs from your past, like Blister In The Sun, Kiss Off and Add It Up!
Wednesday
Palma Violets @ MH of Williamsburg – Great meat and potatoes sounding rock band, Palma Violets are playing a few NYC shows this week as part of their US/UK tour in support of their recent release, Danger in the Club.
Clara Lofaro @ Rockwood Music Hall – Not a kind of artist you’d traditionally find on Pancakes & Whiskey, but being one to expose the best musical talent performing around NYC, it’d be a shame not to promote this show. Clara’s incredible vocal talent covers song styles from pop, jazz, and singer-songwriter influential styles.
Thursday
Krill @ Palisades – If you listen to Krill’s new album A Distant Fist Unclenching, you’ll hear a three-piece rock band that uses unconventional song models and melodies to give you a great alternative to traditional pop chord progressions that drown your ears most of the time.
Kaki King @ Rough Trade – A brilliant guitarist in every aspect of the craft, it takes a truly special musician to make a musical piece capture you without any lyrics. Understanding of tone variety, dynamics, and tempo is required and Kaki King masters them all perfectly through her virtuoso guitar playing.
Friday
Susanne Sundfør @ Rough Trade – On tour in support of Ten Love Songs, her fifth studio release, will hopefully help establish Susanne’s presence in the indie-pop world. With a piercingly beautiful and haunting vocal style, the Norwegian singer-songwriter jolts energy and artistic beauty throughout her catalog.
The Rentals @ Music Hall Of Williamsburg – Matt Sharp, formerly of Weezer has been touring with his band The Rentals for awhile now and bring a high-energy show with some alternative rock perfect for a Friday night.
Saturday
Perfect Pussy @ BK Bazaar – After nearly a solid two-year run, Brooklyn Night Bazaar will be closing it’s doors for the last time on Saturday before heading to the beach for the summer, and hopefully a new location after that. Come help the venue close out the location with a bash from Perfect Pussy.
Sunday
Face To Face @ Bowery Ballroom – In the classic punk mold, Face To Face, has been going at it off and on, for 25 years and when they hit the Bowery this Sunday they will blast you into orbit.
