Female are a local NYC quartet that combines modern indie sensibilities with classic rock familiarity. On “Alex,” lead singer Nick Llobet sneers “What’s destroying me, is destroying you, too / You better get out while you can” with a McCartney or Bowie-ish melodicism over dreamy minor chords. It sounds angry, sweet and sour all at the same time. The song builds to a final refrain where Llobet is woefully calling the name “Alex” over Silvio Vega’s guitar, and Alex Major and Ethan Sass’ hypnotic drum and bass combination.
