September is flying by with reckless abandon, so slow it down a bit and treat yourself to a show this week. Check out our Pancake Picks below for the best shows of the week for 9-14-15.
Monday
Duran Duran @ Terminal 5 – Duran Duran helped lay down the groundwork for many of today’s electro-pop bands with infectious songs like “Rio” and “Hungry Like The Wolf.” Still going strong today, they bring it hard with danceable tunes you’ll be singing along to.
Heartless Bastards & Alberta Cross @ MHOW – This double bill consisting of two fabulous rock bands is the perfect way to start the week.
Tuesday
Diane Coffee @ Baby’s All Right – The drummer for Foxygen (Shaun Fleming) has his own groovy band called Diane Coffee, and with their new album Everybody’s A Good Dog being dropped last week, this is a show that can’t be missed.
Wednesday
St. Paul & The Broken Bones @ Brooklyn Bowl – This Soul/Rock/R&B sextet will have you bouncing around Brooklyn Bowl with their high-intensity live show. Not bad for a Wednesday.
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard @ MHOB – King Gizz has become one of my favorite bands the last few years with their impressive albums and ridiculous live shows. Featuring two drummers, flutes, harmonicas and the willingness to melt your face off with some psych-rock – this is a show you gotta catch at all costs.
Thursday
Rancid @ Terminal 5 – Rancid made their name in the early 90’s with some high-tempo, punk revival tunes, but are still chugging along with their powerful live shows and the ability to tell a story in less than two minutes. Throw your suspenders and Docs on before you head over to T5 and dance.
Great Good Fine Ok & Vacationer@ MHOW – So, you feel like dancing? Get there early to catch one of NYC’s fastest rising electro-pop bands in ‘Great Good Fine Ok’ before Vacationers’ set and you will do just that with this incredible double bill.
Ruby Amanfu @ Rockwood Music Hall – Emmy nominated singer/songwriter, Ruby Amanfu, best known for her work with Jack White, is playing a special show at Rockwood Music Hall that you don’t want to miss.
Friday
ZZ Ward @ Irving Plaza – ZZ Ward’s voice reminds us of some of the old-time greats such as Aretha Franklin and Etta James, but brings a refreshing twist of her own to the party with her lyrics and delivery.
Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters @ Hammerstein – The greatest lead singer to ever take the stage is still going strong with his newest project, The Space Shifters, who bring a massive sound to accompany Mr. Plants unwavering vocals. Unbelievably this show hasn’t sold out yet, so hurry to buy your tickets before it does.
Saturday
Hank & Cupcakes + Rocket & The Ghost @ Mercury Lounge – Two of our favorite NYC bands on one bill…whoah! Hank & Cupcakes is taking off for the winter to record a new album and are having one last show this year in the city to celebrate. Add in Rocket & The Ghost, this show is your best bet to see two fabulous and local bands doing it right.
Sunday
Fishbone @ Brooklyn Bowl – The Legends known as Fishbone have been killing it for 30+ years and if you haven’t seen their legendary live show yet, this is your chance. Feel like bringing the kiddies? Then you’re in luck as at 12pm on Sunday they are also playing an “All-ages” gig too.
