Wednesday night at Rockwood Music Hall was another great night of music from the Brooklyn based trio, Ember Isles. When I listened to their music when deciding my CMJ schedule, I made sure to put a big star next to their name as a “must see” act. The girls’ harmonies are absolutely breathtaking; which was highlighted numerous times during their performance.
Starting off with a completely acapella selection, the room was quickly hushed and caught up in how flawless their voices blended. They put me in the mind of The Staves and their legendary harmonies. Unlike The Staves, they have a more pronounced country influence, backed by strong fiddle work.
Tamsin Wilson, Hannah Read and Megan Lui couldn’t have sounded any better on songs like “John James,” the introspective “Love Me,” and a wonderful cover of Dirk Powell’s “Waterbound.” As the applause grew and grew after each song, I knew I’d have to make it my business to see them again sometime soon. I think you should too.
