It wasn’t your typical, casual, “let’s swing by this act for a few” CMJ crowd. Spectators filed into Fat Baby with a purpose that night – which makes sense, when you hear just how purposeful this band is. Fittingly, Death By Chocolate’s set was short and sweet, and the crowd ate it up. (Also fitting: the chocolate-themed rockers are Swiss.)
Fat Baby is a luxuriously gritty haunt, and Death By Chocolate couldn’t have been a better treat for the feel. Melting into the darkness, they were an explosion of tight riffs and edgy vocals, which were enhanced by their utterly ecstatic expressions. Every time Death By Chocolate got into a good groove with each other (which was often), their level of excitement gave Charlie Bucket a run for his money. But the real golden ticket was how quickly it spread to the crowd.
When you’re in the depths of the LES, there’s only one way to celebrate a good groove – a burst of violent headbanging. Death By Chocolate were happy to deliver. “You’re a hypocritical liar!” sang Mathias Schenk as they tore their solos to pieces and thrashed to the drums.
“What we’re gonna do is a small buildup, and then we’re gonna punch you in the face,” he announced matter-of-factly before their last few songs. No argument from the crowd. If your time is up, Death By Chocolate is the way to go.
