Having covered Lucius a handful of times in the last few years, we here at P&W absolutely adore them and last night had the chance to see them perform some new songs off their upcoming album at a secret show in the Rose Bar at Gramercy Park Hotel.
The Rose bar at the hotel is usually suited for swanky, jazzy get-togethers with its dim lighting, avant-garde art adorning the walls and low/small stage. On this night a different crowd, of about 75 industry folks would pack the joint for a harmonious performance by one of the best pure musical groups on the scene.
Holly and Jess took the stage in matching outfits of gold complete with studded leggings and also sported new short hair do’s, which made them look like musical superheroes. They stepped up to the old school 2-sided mic, which they would use often in their short 45 minute set, and belted out what seemed to be a new tune, with a chorus that was so powerful it just about knocked me on my ass with it’s sincerity.
Mixing in old tunes like “Genevive” and “Go Home,” with new tracks such as “Born Again Teen,” had the capacity room begging for more while we swayed and danced. The highlight of the new material, for me at least, was the slow burner of a track called “Gone Insane” and the chorus is still ringing in my head. Whether it was older material or new stuff, the band was on-point the whole set and have never sounded better, and it makes us so excited for the new album and tour.
