The first night of The Soul Rebels’ three-night residency was off to a bouncing start…literally. The New Orleans based jazz ensemble was joined on the Brooklyn Bowl stage by Big Freedia and at one point, half of the crowd.
The show-goers were restless as they waited in anticipation for The Soul Rebels’ party to begin. The group was met with cheers and intermittent shouts for Big Freedia as they took the stage. After a quick introduction the brass band unleashed their powerful horns and percussion section. Later, the crowd provided the lyrics as the band played their cover of Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You.”
Then Big Freedia strolled in. The Queen of Bounce took over the room and invited anyone who knew how to bounce onto the stage. With a packed platform she took on the role of a fierce drill sergeant and commanded the group to shake their asses. The eight-piece brass band continued to provide their eclectic sound so the crowd could twerk, bounce and pop the night away.
In the past The Soul Rebels have collaborated with Metallica, Joey Bada$$, The String Cheese Incident and played with Disclosure, Trombone Shorty, Gary Clarke Jr. and Kanye West. Their ability to take radio hits and transform them into soul and funk masterpieces is one reason why the band has been asked to perform on stages and at festivals around the world. The charisma and New Orleans’ style of the group and their invigorating approach to jazz and funk is another element that sets them apart.
