Damn, Thermals, back at it again! Sorry. But it’s true: after three years, the Portland group has returned with their seventh LP We Disappear and a cross country tour beginning in April. On the new album, singer Hutch Harris veers sharply from the band’s usual fiction, lending his distinct voice to personal tales of heartache and loneliness.
“Into the Code” kicks off with a rip roaring, grunge infused bass line, followed by “Hey You,” a pop rock reverie featuring the Grim Reaper. In “My Heart Went Cold,” post-relationship realizations are paired with a relentlessly catchy tune. It’s odd, but it works. “A lot of the record is about regret,” explains Harris, “still loving someone after a break-up and hanging on to these feelings.” The band calls album standout ‘Thinking of You’, “one of the most straight-forward love songs we’ve ever written…it’s a song that says exactly what it means.”
Produced by Chris Walla, We Disappear is an unabashedly sincere examination of modern life. Technology, love and death are big themes throughout. The lyrics drift over social-media ennui, fear of insignificance, and the absurdity/necessity of love. There is a definite shift in message on this one, it’s much more vulnerable than past works. The overall sound however, is very much The Thermals; long time fans and those of us who miss noughties indie should be pleased.
