It was a dreary, rain-spitting-in-your-face kind of day on Friday, which has apparently become a trend. I entered The Standard in East Village for the first time, taking in all of the posh humans who I would never become close to knowing and the elegant yet chic décor of the hotel that made me want to take off my rained-on shoes. I ordered a $9 Stella at the bar in the midst of businessmen drinking pints of Germany’s finest and model-esque girls sipping on cocktails – clearly I was out of place.
I stepped out of my comfort zone that day to attend Maybird’s CD release party for their EP Turning Into Water and boy was it worth it. Friends, fans and soon-to-be fans gathered in the penthouse of The Standard surrounded by windows overlooking the gray city.
Maybird has a classic rock vibe fit for the modern era. As they played the entirety of their EP, I felt like I was transformed into a different time period. With clean guitar sounds and rhythmically soothing vocals, their sound is pleasant to the ear. Maybird’s music can be the soundtrack to a driving scene in a film or something that would translate well if played in an outdoor concert venue and was listened to by people lying in the grass.
Personal favorites off the record include “Maybird” and the title track, “Turning Into Water.” Don’t miss these gents play their next New York City show May 12th at The Bowery Electric, it’s bound to be amazing.
