Okay, simply put, it’s hot as fuck outside, there’s no escaping it for the next month or so. So instead of trying to beat the heat, we yield to the unrelenting humidity and constant need to wipe our brows of the salty beads of sweat and trudge on with our Pancake Picks – the best shows of the week.
Monday
Warpaint @ Baby’s All Right – A free rock show on a Monday is always a great way to start your week off! Head on down to Baby’s early for 6pm doors to catch the ethereal Warpaint, who creates incredible harmonies that will make you forget the week just started.
Tuesday
The Cactus Blossoms @ Rough Trade – Have a hankering for that old-time country music? We’re not talking about the watered down, pop version of today, oh no this is the real deal here folks. The Cactus Blossoms are a throwback to when country music actually meant more than a pickup truck and a cold can of watered down beer.
Wednesday
Heyrocco @ Mercury Lounge – Head out for the early show to catch Heyrocco – who have self proclaimed they are “South Carolina’s 1st Rock N’ Roll Band,” who will treat you to some fantastic alt-grunge tunes. Their quirky and upbeat rock songs will transport you back to the times, when staring at your shoes, meant you weren’t interested.
Walk The Moon @ Hammerstein Ballroom – If you haven’t heard of Walk The Moon yet, there’s a chance you’ve been living under a rock. This fantastic indie-pop band will have you dancing up a storm and losing your mind within minutes of them stepping on stage. Get your dancing shoes out and stretch those muscles, because you aren’t as young as you used to be.
Thursday
Crushed Out @ Mercury Lounge – This two piece band from New England and L.A. mixes all types of genres together to make a special brand of music, but essentially is just good old fashioned rock. The chemistry between the real-life couple is undeniable while on stage and create a wonderful energy that is shared with the crowd, to make for a memorable gig.
Friday
Swans @ Bowery Ballroom – We heard you like guitars, more specifically, loud and rhythmic guitars. Swans are known for their math/noise rock that will have you bouncing off your ballroom neighbor in no time flat.
Monogold @ Rough Trade – Brooklyn’s own Monogold is on the fast-track to stardom. Catch their frenetic live show at a small venue, before they’re playing much bigger rooms.
Saturday
Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ Central Park Summerstage – Another free show by the good folks at Summerstage and it’s a doozy. Be sure to get there early for the prime spots to take in the Psych-rock stylings of UMO.
Ron Gallo @ Shea Stadium BK – The former front-man of Toy Soldiers has his own thing going on now, and it’s really great. Mixing garage, punk, fuzz and a bit of psych, Gallo has been getting quite the buzz around town for his amazing live shows.
Sunday
Nice As Fuck @ Rough Trade – So, Jenny Lewis has yet another project and we couldn’t be more excited to check it out. Pretty much whatever Lewis is involved with is always a good time, so be sure to catch them now, so you can tell your friends about them first.
