In 2011, University of Michigan sound engineering student Jake Merkin set out to record an album to analog tape for his senior thesis. He enlisted the best local musicians for the sessions and the result was Vulfpeck’s debut album, Mit Peck.
Cut to 2016: Vulfpeck sells out a three-stint at the 600-person capacity Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg. Along with a slue of special guests (such as Rachael Price of Lake Street Dive and Bernard Purdie), the band showcased their brand of soul-funk for a solid two hours on Saturday night. To cap off the week, Glee’s Darren Criss joined Vulfpeck and Bernard Purdie on stage to perform an epic rendition of “MMMBop” by Hanson.
