Mondays in New York City are dreadful after weekends full of debauchery except for when you get to go to a concert in the penthouse of The Standard East Village. Looking out off the ledge of the rooftop, many stories off the ground, you can see the lights of the city twinkling all around bringing a sense of calm to the beginning of a hectic week.
That bright twinkle of the city lights was echoed by the twinkle in Hailey Knox’s voice last Monday night. The seventeen-year-old was fresh off her national television debut where she performed her new single “Awkward” on the TODAY show. She has qualities of your typical young musical newcomer – a fresh-faced and bright-eyed, ready-to-take-on-the-world attitude combined with adorable stage jitters – but she stayed poised and let her obvious talent shine through.
Hailey is a wiz when it comes to making beautiful music with her looping pedal. She creates sounds of many instruments just using her voice and combines that with her sweet yet soulful vocals and smooth guitar licks, layering everything without missing a beat – that is until her looping pedal just couldn’t handle the amazing-ness that she was giving it and crashed on her halfway through. Being the pro that she is, Hailey laughed it off and killed the rest of her set.
Hailey played all the songs off her debut EP A Little Awkward. “Loopty Loop” had to be my favorite because it was the best display of all of her talents in one song. She also threw in her cover of “Bills” by LunchMoney Lewis and debuted two new songs. Her material covers what it’s like to be a teenager in the age of social media, not in a horrible, whiney way that it could be, but in a cleverer mature manner that even 25-year-old me could relate to.
Wise beyond her years and destined for success, Hailey Knox is a name that everyone should be watching out for. She could be the next viral-star turned pop sensation within the next year.
