Tucked away inside the winding passageways inside Chelsea Market here in NYC lies YouTube Space. Situated directly across the street from the mammoth Google building, this space was host to a RSVP only music presentation that would be the perfect beginning to an unsettling week.
Amongst the chit-chat of various patrons of all walks of life, conspicuous men dressed all in black with camera equipment slung over shoulders, and the open bar where drinks flowed seamlessly throughout the night, we were treated to a trio of dynamic performances that kept the good vibes circulating through the room.
First up was Brooklyn-based Slothrust, which was comprised of singer/guitarist Leah Wellbaum, bassist Kyle Bann and drummer Will Gorin. The trio hammered out a short but sweet set of alt-rock. Leah’s voice delivered a sense of longing and reflection amongst the driving rhythm section and ethereal soundscape.
Second was a singer named Pronoun, aka Alyse Vellturo. Also based in Brooklyn, she enraptured the crowd with her easy-going, accessible, lo-fi sound. But don’t let the lulling nature of the songs fool you. While the crowd eagerly sang along, some of the songs were a bit sad.
Ending the night was the only artist who didn’t hail from Brooklyn, Terra Lightfoot. The Canadian born blues-rocker electrified the space with soaring vocals, unbridled stage presence, infectious enthusiasm and guitar chops to boot. Playing and vibing nicely off her bandmates she even made time to offer us a ride to Canada for those seeking refuge from a Trump presidency. Stepping offstage to launch herself into a blistering guitar solo to end the night, Terra’s performance punctuated a night of great music, great drinks and great company all around.
