By the time I got to Irving Plaza Thursday night I thought I forgot to turn back my watch because the place was already packed. The sold-out crowd arrived early to see Bronx born Soul/Funk singer Jonny P who now calls Nashville home. His soulful voice is as good live as it is on his EP Right to You. While I don’t see any upcoming tour dates on his website, I recommend staying up to date because his set was amazing.
L.A.’s Johnnyswim took the stage to an anxious crowd. The husband/wife duo, Amanda Sudano and Abner Ramirez, have a stage presence that I’ve never seen before. You could see and feel a genuine love of each other. The positive energy was conveyed to the crowd, a crowd of mostly couples – young/old, black/white, gay/straight – a crowd that sang every word to every song. The couple intermingled with the crowd. Amanda grabbed a lucky fan’s cell phone to record part of the show, and they both wound up in the middle of the crowd to sing one of their songs.
There was plenty of banter between songs. Amanda tried a little comedy with the old “No Eyed Deer” joke as Abner tuned his guitar. A request for a song from their Christmas album was denied because Amanda joked she couldn’t remember any. Johnnyswim appears to be done touring for the year, but in the meantime you can listen to their new album Georgica Pond. You can also check them out on NBC’s coverage of this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade where they’ll be performing. For more info check out www.johnnyswim.com or their social media pages.
