When bands begin gaining recognition there’s a push by writer’s to find an apt comparison to the new group’s sound – “The Beatles revisited,” “a young Dr. Dre,” etc. The comparisons can help drive new listeners, but can often pigeonhole and mischaracterize. Out of all the New York-based rock bands, The Britanys are probably the least affected by the comparisons writers have been making to their sound.
Yes, The Britanys do bring The Strokes to mind and you will hear vocal similarities to Alex Turner, but their music and performance is all their own. The foursome of Lucas Long, Steele Kratt, Lucas Carpenter and Jake Williams are electric and charismatic. Their sound is lo-fi, garage rock with heavy fuzz. Kratt hammers on the drums while wearing a boyish grin- making you think he has a secret. Long, Carpenter and Williams careen back and forth, leaning into each other as they go deep into chord progressions.
During their late-night show at Rough Trade on Friday the guys performed songs off of their recent EP, Early Tapes (Demos), and introduced the crowd to music they’ve been working on with Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, The Drums), which is slated for release in 2017. They played with a relaxed urgency as they powered through verse to chorus in “Get My.” For a band that is so comfortable on stage, it is hard to believe that they haven’t released a full album yet. Can someone hurry up and sign them already – hint, hint Rough Trade Records – so fans can get more of what they deserve?
