If you were fortunate enough to find yourself at the late show at Baby’s All Right on Friday, you would have uncovered The Night Game. As the name suggests you may have expected some late-night card game or a band with more somber tunes or debauchery that only could be had under the cover of darkness. The frontman may have looked familiar, though you likely couldn’t place him. With only one song on Spotify, The Night Game is completely shrouded in mystery.
Here is what we know about them so far… The Night Game started to develop about three years ago and is the newest project from Martin Johnson, formerly of Boys Like Girls. Their music spans multiple genres- rock, pop, ‘80s glam and funk. After hearing the release of their debut single, “The Outfield,” John Mayer went to see them live and invited them to join him on his upcoming tour. Gotye volunteered to perform the background vocals on “The Outfield.” And they recently sold out two shows in New York, one at Mercury Lounge and the one at Baby’s.
The Night Game is the epitome of “if you build it, they will come.” Hearing them, you realize that before listening there was a void in your musical library. Seeing them, you discover that artists can be calm and energetic and inventive and classic all at the same time. And of course, they packed Baby’s for an electric, fifty-minute set. Martin Johnson is writing music that audiences are craving, while pulling from sounds reminiscent of Springsteen and The Police.
The Night Game is on tour in the United States through mid-August. You can get updates about live shows and new music here.
