I won’t bore you with the details, but due to some miscommunication I was only able to catch 90 seconds of the Living Colour set opening for Prophets Of Rage on Tuesday night at the Apollo.
From what I saw and heard, the band was on fire on the Apollo stage and speaking with a few people that saw the whole set, mentioned the same thing. It makes sense there was a sense of urgency to their set as opening for Prophets means a very volatile and significant band is about to wreck the place not long after you exit; but Living Colour is made for this shit and was the perfect choice to open at the legendary venue.
As soon as I walked in they were in the middle of their 1988 hit, “Middle Man,” which is off Vivid, their breakthrough and legendary album. Corey Glover, the best dressed man in rock, was wailing away with his piercing vocals while Vernon Reid had his head down and stroking his signature PRS guitar. Meanwhile one of the best rhythm sections on earth with Will Calhoun on drums and Doug Wimbish on the bass, were hammering down in perfect time. Before I knew it I was escorted out after the song and headed home on the subway.
