There are forces of nature in rock n roll, and then there’s Samuel T. Harrington of Future Islands. The Baltimore based band brought their snyth-pop fueled sound for three nights at Brooklyn Steel, and of course there was plenty of Harrington’s trademark snarl and whip-like slides across the stage.
This night began with Harrington stalking the stage like a jungle cat eyeing its prey. Plenty of chest thumps and face slaps (yes, his own) only seemed to serve to pump him up even more than you would expect from a Future Islands show.
Harrington’s piercing blue eyes and heavy metal-esque growl make him one of the most intense frontmen in the industry. But at the same time he manages to exude a sense of vulnerability, thanks to his interpretative-like dance moves and songs that connect with a longing inside of their fans.
The band leaned heavily on Moroder-inspired beats with a heavy dose of new wave flourishes. They delivered a fan-friendly set that included hits like Singles and Aladdin as they wrapped up their U.S. tour on this three stand before heading off to Europe.
