“Who are we?” – “The Suffers!”
Where are we from? – “Houston!”
If you have never seen The Suffers live it is beyond a musical experience. Immediately introducing themselves in the form of a call and response with the audience to affirm who they are and where they are from. The tactic is, if you leave with nothing else tonight you will wake up tomorrow with this embedded piece of information “The Suffers….. Houston.” This is how to grow a fanbase, this and absolutely owning every venue they step inside with their incredible songs and stories. The Suffers hail from Houston, Texas and this 9 piece soul elite, as always, came prepared to raise the roof at Brooklyn Steel. Fronted by Kam Franklin’s huge personality and staggering vocals it was hard not to drop what you were doing and get your dance on. An hour of back to back grooves with a full horn section, keys, percussion, drum and bass, and backing vocals. They could do no wrong.
The band formed in 2011 and in the past 6 years have gained national and international (European tour starts this week) recognition for their work. Their debut self titled album was met with critical acclaim back in 2011 and it opened doors to take the band full time on the road. Kam mentioned mid set about their first ever NYC performance a few years ago at Rockwood Music Hall to about 150 people, as she spoke out so appreciatively to the huge crowd that had gathered tonight to catch their set.
It’s always hard to pick the stand out songs when the set is jam packed with gems but Kam Franklin can take you from heartbreak to party at the drop of a hat. Hits from their debut self titled album including “Make Some Room,” “Gwan,” and “Giver” were the standouts, and anyone who walked in without knowing much about The Suffers were treated to some rarities too. Absolutely stunning performance which the room couldn’t get enough of.
The Suffers head off for the next few weeks on a European tour which will see them perform in England, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, and France.
