Los Angeles based alt rockers Silversun Pickups played Brooklyn Steel November 17th. Not even a broken arm could slow down lead singer/guitarist Brian Aubert. His fuzzy guitar and harmonies with Nikki Monninger who plays bass were on point.
Unfortunately, due to a band policy, we had to either check our cameras or remove them from building after photographing the first three songs. I wasn’t about to leave thousands of dollars in equipment at the coat check, but at the same time I wasn’t about to miss this show. I half-heartedly retuned to my car to leave my camera but returned in time to catch “Substitution” and “Latchkey Kids.”
Aubert apologized to the crowd for not playing Brooklyn until now, especially since that’s where it all began. Silversun Pickups played their first ever show together in Brooklyn at CMJ 2000. That was before keyboardist Joe Lester and drummer Chris Guanlao joined the band. It was also five years before the band released their first album. Aubert joked that they’d be back when they made their next record…in twenty years! They proceeded to jam through “Panic Switch” and a few songs that were on that CMJ demo tape, “Lazy Eye” and “Kissing Families.”
