The third weekend of February brought a winter storm warning to NYC, but Friday night (February 16th) was party time for a full house of concert-goers at Terminal 5 with performances by three singer-songwriters: the fast rising Børns with Mikky Ekko and Charlotte Cardin opening.
Mikky Ekko (best known for his work with Rihanna) released a new single “Not the One” in January and has an album coming out soon. Ekko had the crowd rocking and singing along, closing with “Stay.”
Next came French Canadian model turned songstress Charlotte Cardin who’s touring on her 2017 release Main Girl.
With the release of his sophomore album Blue Madonna on January 12th of this year, Børns (Garrett Borns) has confirmed that his highly successful debut “Dopamine” was not a fluke. With his falsettos and androgynous good looks, he seems to be the coming of an indie-pop Michael Jackson. In the midst of an international tour, this evening’s sold out show at Terminal 5, is his second stop in NYC. After appearing last October at the Public Hotel, Baby’s All Right and Rough Trade, the venues on this tour evidence his growing popularity.
As he’s done this tour, Børns performed his new record Blue Madonna end to end. There were probably more bouquets of flowers than I’ve seen at any show except for ice skating at the Olympics; and his adoring fans were singing along to every song and screamed every time he accepted flowers from someone at the barricade.
When he came back for the encore, Børns and Charlotte Cardin performed a duet cover of the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever.” After 4 more songs from his earlier records, he closed out the night with “Electric Love” and had the crowd dancing and singing. The sweat-drenched, but energetic fans were more than satisfied as they left the venue into the cold night.
