Vera Sola (aka Danielle Aykroyd) stopped by Rough Trade last night (Mon 12/3/18) for a brief set on the floor of the record store and a signing of her new record “Shades.”
Just recently returned from a European tour with her band, it was her first time playing solo in awhile. Small intimate performances like this are perfect for Aykroyd, whose lyrics are extremely personal and evinces her poetry background. Her music strikes me as a sort of gothic folk, haunting and eerie at times, belying the bright and cheery background of Rough Trade. I would probably have turned the lights down and thrown some shadows but the scene did not take away from the music. Every breath, pronunciation of a T, knee bend, kick back of a foot and leg lift seemed to emphasize a lyric. Yes, she really meant that one!
Vera Sola has a few more stops in the US during December (supporting Haerts as well as one headline) so please go see her and take a listen to the new record as well.
