Cage the Elephant, with help from Young The Giant, Bakar and Willow Avalon, brought the electrifying Neon Pill tour to New England on Thursday evening in Mansfield.
Avalon got the show kicked off with a healthy dose of southern charm. Not necessarily the expected fit with the other three acts, she got the crowd going with a Dolly Pardon style drawl. She’s an incredible songwriter – that combined with her stage banter definitely puts her in the one to watch category for the future.
Bakar came out next and had a brief but energetic set – just him and backing tracks that included “Hell N Back” a hit that got radio and commercial play. Bakar has endless potential, but it feels like his set could feel fuller or more diverse.
Young The Giant came third and reminded people why they’re one of the most underrated live shows out there. The indie rock band has always had success with their albums, but their live show brings more energy than the albums with a fuller sound. Lead singer Sameer Gadhia made mention of trying to get outside of their usual comfort zone and try something new each night, and it works. He’s a captivating entertainer and commands attention.

By the time Cage the Elephant hit, the sold out crowd was ready to burst. A broken foot complete with a scooter couldn’t stop Matt Shultz from his usual, mind blowing performance. Shultz has long been the closest thing this generation has to prime Mick Jagger and one working leg did nothing to stop that.

Despite a younger than expected crowd with many high schoolers, the energy was contagious throughout the venue. “Broken Boy” kicked off the night with tons of pyro. While Matthew Shultz danced around on his scooter, his brother and guitarist Brad riled up the crowd, even jumping into the first few rows of fans early on on the night.
