Sufjan Stevens has always been one of my favorite indie-folk artists, so needless to say we here at Pancakes & Whiskey are all pretty excited for his upcoming album Carrie & Lowell to be released by the end of next month. Monday he released the first single off the album in “No Shade in the Shadow of the Cross.” Sounding a bit like Iron & Wine’s cover of “Such Great Heights,” the melancholy song provides his trademark vocal sound and fingerpicked acoustic guitar while singing of violent deaths in what one might assume a touch at crucifixion? Either way the song is classic Sufjan and only makes me that much more excited for the release of Carrie & Lowell on March 31.
