Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes played two themed shows at The Stone Pony this weekend. The February 27th show was “Rare Jukes: All the Non-Hits, All The Time” – a set of rarely played Jukes’ tunes which the band had to re-learn for the show. The Feb. 28th show was “Prove It All Night: the Music of Bruce Springsteen” – a set of Springsteen songs that had to be learned from scratch. I was lucky enough to cover the Bruce show and there was a huge buzz that The Boss himself was going to show. One thing for sure, whether of not he showed up, this was going to be a great gig.
The place began to quickly fill up shortly after the 7pm door. A DJ played songs of legendary artists that have played The Stone Pony, while giving brief tidbits of their show at this iconic venue. By the time Southside took the stage you literally could not move. While Bruce never showed up, Southside and the boys had everyone sweating on a cold winter night.
