I was having one of those nights where all I wanted to do was stay in and work on my own projects. But a commitment is a commitment so I grabbed my camera and made my way to Baby’s All Right to check out Cold Fronts and The Cribs on night two of three sold out shows in NYC. The result was a night that had me surprised and excited. Going to this show was easily the best decision I have made in a long time.
Cold Fronts put on a lively show. I always enjoy seeing them play. Frontman Craig Almquist, with his animated facial expressions, has a captivating stage presence. It was clear that for a good chunk of the crowd this was their first introduction to the band. None the less, Cold Fronts succeeded in exciting them. I had no doubt that they would. Their songs are catchy and energizing. It is almost impossible to not get wrapped up in their performance. They played a new song, one that Craig informed the crowd is a love song from the band to Baby Haim, appropriately titled “Baby Haim.” The band recently made this song available on SoundCloud. When they did they tweeted Baby Haim about the song. She responded, “I’m permanently blushing!!!.” Love it! They finished up their set with a cover of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” Their extended version of the song had Craig putting down his guitar, jumping off the stage and singing to members of the crowd. He finished up by dropping to his knees and belting out “I love you baabyyyy.” Fantastic!

When The Cribs took the stage the crowd was ready. Instantly the room became a frenzy of dancing and flailing body parts. I was thoroughly impressed with the love exuding from this crowd for this band. Guitarist and vocalist Ryan Jarman told the room that he is always afraid that New York will be too cool to dance. He was happy that this crowd was dancing. And that they were. Young or old it didn’t matter. Everyone was having a blast and everyone was crowd surfing. Even members of Cold Fronts could be seen raised high above the crowd bobbing on a sea of hands. Admittedly, I was not too familiar with The Cribs before this night but their hour and a half long set blew my mind, instantly making me a fan.

I am so thankful I decided to leave my apartment that night. Cold Fronts and The Cribs put on one of the most energetic shows I have been to. It has been a while since I have seen a line up so perfectly matched. I now know why these two bands have sold out three shows in NY this past week.
