THE ROOKS ARE SMOOTH AS SILK AT MERCURY LOUNGE

Saturday nights in New York City are usually a pretty good time. The Rooks made sure this past Saturday was no exception as they flat out brought the noise and the soul to a packed Mercury Lounge. The six-piece band that specializes in R&B/Neo-Soul brought their smooth and powerful throwback style music into the faces of those who were smart enough to come see the band work their magic. First, the twin brother and sister team known as Bailen opened the night up with some harmonious indie-rock.

Playing a mix of both the old and the new shit, the band was as tight and smooth flowing as a band can possibly get. From the smooth sax, crisp drumming, lounge-worthy bass lines, and of course the man himself, Garth Taylor leading the way on vocals, these guys really help keep alive that old soul feel. Their cover of Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills” wasn’t too shabby neither.
