In three short years, Alt-J went from playing Glasslands, to selling out Madison Square Garden, which is a mighty feat! In order to accomplish that as a band, you need a few things to happen; number one on the list, is a fan-base that adores you. Alt-J fans didn’t disappoint, selling out the “world’s most famous arena,” hours before the gig. They were also there early as the first fans to have lined up for GA were there before 9am.
Before the main act, there was the up-and-coming elctro-rock group from NYC known as Phantogram. Despite being blanketed in near darkness, the electricity that Phantogram projected was palpable and showed all in attendance that they are be a force to be reckoned with.
As soon as Alt-J stepped out onto the extremely foggy and backlit stage, the place went nuts, you could feel the energy the crowd brought – in your bones and in your ears, it was quite remarkable really. They wasted no time and promptly lit into “Hunger Of The Pine,” followed by “Fitzpleasure.” Lead singer, Joe Newman, then thanked the crowd for their amazing support for being able to sell out the famous arena and couldn’t have sounded more truthful and humble about it. The rest of the show, for me, was a blur of fog and lights that was highlighted by moody music and a percussionist that really drove the ship all night. Alt-J was incredibly tight, and I was shown why they are one of the biggest acts in music today.
