When it’s one of the biggest sports weekends of the entire year, hopefully you didn’t spend it sitting in your apartment playing tiddlywinks. With the Red Sox/Yanks, NFL Draft, the boxing match of the century, and of course the Kentucky Derby take place within a 36-hour period, you obviously celebrate accordingly. Thus was the case on Saturday as a few us of on the Pancakes & Whiskey team dress like southern landowners and made our way to American Whiskey for their Taste to the Finish Line Derby Party.
Located a block south of The Garden, American Whiskey is known as one of the better whiskey bars in the city, with over 150 American-made whiskey brand selections behind the bar and an array of tasty southern-based food dishes on the menu to match. With plaid suits, bowties, hats, and classy dresses out in full force, the pomp and partying almost makes you forget this is all for a 60-second event. Everyone loves an excuse to party in this town.
A well-known whiskey bar can’t throw a party without some exciting special whiskey cocktail selections. Jameson Black Barrel was on-site with their own version of the Dark & Stormy, replacing rum with their select reserve black barrel brand to go with ginger beer, which was an awesome substitution for the classic cocktail for someone who’s not a fan of rum. Maker’s 46 Kentucky Bourbon had my personal favorite drink of the day, a sweet mixture of averna, lemon, simple syrup, basil, and strawberries. It was the Wild Turkey Bourbon that was the fan favorite of the day with their mint-based cocktail, not to mention the best shwag.
Yes American Whiskey knows how to throw a damn good whiskey party. Was a little surprised the only food selection was soup and oysters, as much as I love them both, how is one supposed to fill up on oysters without the overconsumption of both them and booze? Check out American Whiskey’s event page for more awesome whiskey events coming up throughout the summer!
