The official first day of summer is still three weeks away, but the summer concert season is in full swing! Here’s our Pancake Picks – best shows of the week.
Monday
PVRIS @ Webster Hall Studio – This alt-rock trio lead by singer Lynn Gunn brings power and charisma finding a mix somewhere between emo and hard rock category. Typically finding themselves in the Warped Tour circuit, they’ll bring their high intensity show to NYC, currently on tour in support of their recent release, White Noise.
Misty Boyce @ Rockwood Stage 1 – Talented local singer-songwriter Misty Boyce’s recent album, The Life is the complete package, building a unique sound ranging from indie-pop to singer-writer. She reminds me of a young Sheryl Crow circa Tuesday Night Music Club days with an arsenal full of raw pop tunes and deeper, more meaningful cuts.
Tuesday
Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas @ Baby’s All Right – Mixing the power of soul influences with a contemporary pop sound, Jessica Hernandez and her band The Deltas drew their sound from artists like Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone, and Gin Wigmore with beautifully sharp vocals and a modern spin on old styles.
Mumford & Sons @ MCU Park At Coney Island – Everybody’s favorite English-folk band is back, this time they have found electric guitars and have plugged in. Go check out their newest jams at Coney Island.
Wednesday
Heat @ Union Pool – Guitar rock band from Canada bring a refreshing sound with a Weezer and The Strokes type of sound. The four-piece finds new ways to take rock into a new era and bring excitement back to riff-driven rock.

Sharkmuffin @ Cake Shop – Need a reason to just let loose and release halfway through the week? Head over to Cake Shop in the LES and let SharkMuffin help you blow off some steam with their fuzz fueled rock show that’s somewhere between grunge and fuzz glam.
Thursday
Gov Ball Presents: Benjamin Booker @ Irving Plaza – Blending a mix of bluesy, raw, rock sound from the 70s that was more about rhythm and feel than perfection, Benjamin brings hair raising rock and one of a kind performance to NYC while in town for GovBall.
Gov Ball Presents; Chromeo @ The Apollo – Couldn’t get tickets to Gov Ball? No worries, catch Chromeo in the Governors Ball After dark series at the legendary Apollo Theater.
Friday
AirLands @ Rockwood Stage 2 – Local indie-rock band takes indie folk rock a little further with some dreamy and ambient instrumental songwriting. They’ve successfully created a sound somewhere between pop rock and experiemental indie folk
Governors Ball Festival Day 1 @ Randall’s Island – With the likes of My Morning Jacket, St. Vincent, Florence & The Machine and Drake – Friday night should be a spectacular display of music.
Saturday
Clean Bandit @ Webster Hall – Arguably the biggest band in the UK in 2014 and one of the hottest new acts in music in general, you’d definitely hear their debut hit single “Rather Be” in some way by now. The British electronic group is in town for GovBall but will also be hitting the local circuit as well.
Governors Ball Festival Day 2 @ Randall’s Island – Day two of NYC’s biggest festival includes huge acts such as Bjork, Deadmau5, Ryan Adams and Conor Oberst!
Sunday
Cheap Girls @ Riis Park Beach Bazaar – Having been hitting the touring circuit consistently since their 2007 formation, their American garage band style of rock and roll makes for a perfect band to check out at Brooklyn Night Bazaar’s new outdoor location.
Governors Ball Festival Day 3 @ Randall’s Island – The final day of the festival just may be the best day to attend with acts like Royal Blood, The War On Drugs, Lana Del Rey and The Black Keys.
