Moon King opened for Mr. Twin Sister Friday night at the beloved Bowery Ballroom. Though the audience was thinnish when they took the stage, the crowd managed to bulk up toward the end of Moon King’s set. The beating heart behind Moon King is long time friends, Maddie Wild and Daniel Woodhead. The duo hail from Toronto adding to the ever-growing roster of recent Canadian talent.

Though young with a slightly unpolished sound, their enthusiasm is a force to be reckoned with. Singer/Songwriter, Woodhead’s energy carried all the way to the person in the back of the room. Onstage, he commits his entire self to the sound as often lunging toward the crowd as to guide the sound from this body. It seems as if Wild and Woodhead couldn’t miss a harmony if they tried. So much so, their voices often merged into one making it hard to discern one from the other.

Most of their set was comprised of songs from their newly released debut LP, Secret Life, including the slow burning androgynous track, “Apocalypse.” Their back-lit bodies cast shadows that towered in purple light behind them. Perhaps, it’s an subtle sign symbol meaning Moon King may possess more than we think.
