I had the honor and privilege to share a bill with Deb Oh & The Cavaliers at an art space in Gowanus about two years ago. Deb, taking complete control the monstrous instrument that is a grand piano and her band glided through their set with a lullaby of stories and a killer driving rhythm. A fusion of Vienna Teng and Carole King with an updated production and arrangement is a good way to sum up Deb’s sound.
Deb’s band’s technique derives from an arena rock sound, but the production and energy surrounding Ms. Oh and her piano creates a world only known to the dimension of song – in which heartbreak and triumph coincide into a giant mass of wonder. The heartbreak story of her relationship with Manhattan is something every New Yorker can relate to – that love-hate relationship in which you only grow stronger over time.
Deb’s new single, “Goodbye Manhattan” may assimilate Sara Bareilles’ tune “Manhattan,” however Deb and the band really know how to create a build-up whilst locking in luxurious harmonies.
New York City has an ability to harden an artist and what they stand for, and sometimes you lose sight of what you really want. But for Deb & The Cavaliers – well, they’re only getting started.
