MANICANPARTY ENERGIZE PIANOS

It’s been just over a year since I’d last seen New York’s own electro-rock band Manicanparty play a packed Rockwood Music Hall for CMJ. The two main members of the band, Pat (keys/percussion) and Jess (vocals) spent most of the summer between New York and Los Angeles working on new material for themselves and with other projects, and played their first show back in NYC on Halloween then followed that up with a late night show at Pianos on a Thursday.

If you’ve never seen the band, the first thing you’ll appreciate is their use of experimentation to establish their own sound in the electro-pop world that’s slowly becoming a pretty crowded with the indie-electro songstresses ,like that are breaking out and finding their way onto the radars of younger music fans in 2015. Manicanparty uses a variety of harder rock guitar parts and tribal rhythm themes to give them their own unique musical platform for Jess to set her piercing vocal ability on top of.

While the crowd for a late night show on a Thursday was a little more reserved than the band would’ve liked, that didn’t stop Pat, Jess, and the rest of the band from bringing the intense and determined energy that the band is known for. This time around was no exception as they were on point for familiar songs including “War Paint” and “Colorful.” They kept their set fresh and unique with a few of the newer songs they’d been working on during their time in L.A. The show may have had less familiar faces to fill the room, but a hardworking band like Manicanparty needs shows like that, to win over a room full of unfamiliar strangers, rather than enjoy the comfort and familiarity of a venue filled with friends.
