While most folks attempt to work off those turkey and stuffing calories well after their meal has digested, I opted to head out to Mercury Lounge and sweat away my Thanksgiving meal beforehand at the Beat Connection show. Seems like a lot of people had the same idea judging from the packed house.
Beginning at around 11pm, the group, hailing from Seattle, Washington, brought great vibes, and upbeat dance grooves out to play with their rich, electro-funk sound. Lead singer Tom Eddy is a bonafide crooner. His rich falsetto permeated the hearts and spirits of everyone in the room, and admittedly, his vocals sounded just as good, if not better than they do recorded. Running through selections from their October release, Product 3, songs like “Thought Through” with its stutter-step drums, “Hesitation” with ample amount of hand-claps throughout, and “Rosealene” with it’s odd, yet interesting synth patterns wove a deep groove into the crowd that would not let go.

The pace of their set was neither frantic, nor languid – they had incredible stage presence and charisma that lasted the entirety of their set. A woman stood next to me as I watched the show before me. She leaned over and asked if I was a photographer. I nodded yes. She then told me “Just because you’re a photographer, doesn’t mean you can’t dance, girl!!” I laughed and proceeded to two-step the rest of the evening.

Jarred Katz, on drums, was equally as impressive, throwing down patterns effortlessly, and changing tempo at the drop of a dime without missing a beat. Reed Juenger manned the synths and looked like he was having the best time out of everyone onstage. Last but not least, Jordan Koplowitz held down bass duties along with some of the keys, rounding out the quartet’s carefully crafted sound. I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to ease into the holiday weekend.
