THE COLD AND THE LOVELY PLAY PIANOS

I’m notoriously scrutinizing of all-girl bands for some reason. Not sure why. Perhaps the ones I’ve seen in the past don’t play with the power and intensity that I enjoy. But all that changed on Tuesday night when I caught The Cold and Lovely’s performance at Pianos on the Lower East Side.

Hailing from Los Angeles and fronted by Megan Toohey on lead vocals and guitar, and Nicole Fiorentino on vocals and bass, they were a quite a force to be reckoned with. I found myself getting caught up in their spacey synths and grinding guitar solos when I should have been focusing on taking photos, and for me that says a lot.

Their music was upbeat and infectious and the crowd responded to it immediately, earning a lot of yelps, with people dancing and swaying with the music as the night progressed. Projections on the screen behind them as they played helped to punctuate their overall sound, seemingly taking everyone on quite a musical trip.
