MOTHER FEATHER & THE VEEVEES GET DIRTY AT THE KNITTING FACTORY
“If there was an ass in front of me, I’d smack it!” shouted The VeeVees’ Sophia Urista during her soundcheck, tapping into the the savage energy of the midnight Knitting crowd. It was a recipe for madness: late show, wild lineup, and of course, Mother Feather. And The VeeVees didn’t help to calm it down.
Stomping onstage in blue fringe heels and a shredded “FREE YOUR ASS” crop top, Sophia embodied a carnal, rock and roll, Sexy Sadie vibe that grabbed every eye in the room. As the band revved up, her thoughts spilled out like a complex, dirty sermon, from “Not anyone on this stage sucks dicks! Just wanted to make that clear,” to “You are not children, because they are not people, they’re only halfway there!”

The VeeVees slammed the Factory with the kind of thunderous, voluptuous rock you probably would have gotten confiscated as a kid – 100% worth hiding in your mattress. While bassist Art Novoselsky practically stood on our shoulders to shred, headbanging and shirtless, Sophia convulsed and contorted like a caffeinated acrobat. Whether she was stealing a stick to beat on the back of the bass drum or making out with the straightest girl in the room, she did it with tremendous attitude. The VeeVees were feisty and enticing, but most importantly, they made you feel bad.

“Have you had the Mother Feather experience yet?” one friend tentatively asked another, just as we were all about to. Unveiling the latest in neon spandex and sparkling facepaint, Ann and Lizzie dove headfirst into an insane set. Right out of the gate, they surprised us with a supercharged cover of David Bowie’s “Suffragette City,” showing us just how much Ziggy Stardust runs through their veins.

People call it an experience for a reason. Mother Feather is nonstop dirt, glitter, and glam, set to badass power ballads sucked out of another era. As taped Xs flew from her top and her legs kicked and split, Ann merged silly and seductive in the way only Mother Feather can. Somewhere between “Totally Awesome!” and the classic “Mother Feather” finale, she was swallowing her mic, scraping speakers for feedback, and even blowing her nose like a rockstar. “New York City LOVES snot rockets!” she assured us, with no argument from the screaming mob.

“This is…what dreams coming true…feels like!” Ann declared, as she and Lizzie burst into a synchronized dance. Mother Feather wrapped with an impassioned chant of “Lest you forget!” which Ann repeated 21 times with piercing eye contact. With a show like that, how could we?
