Celestial Shore, Leapling @ Shea Stadium – Come Monday, Celestial Shore brings California math rock filtered through the minds of Brooklynites (and surely, an enviable array of distortion pedals) to Shea Stadium. The like-minded Leapling promise a groovy intro; two local acts charting a good chunk of experimental pop territory.
Tuesday
The Weeks @ Rough Trade – After their quick trip into indie acclaim earned them a strong following (thanks, in part, to a pretty little single called “Buttons”), The Weeks are taking their brew of Mississippi Southern rock and the loyal fans that come with it to Brooklyn by way of Rough Trade this Tuesday.
Wednesday
Johnnyswim @ MHOW – Johnnyswim’s roots are in Nashville, which some might say accounts for the great folk-soul-blues-pop thing they’ve got going on. The husband-and-wife duo also have close ties to R&B legend Donna Summer, who happens to be their mother-in-law and mother, respectively. The other secret ingredients? Find out on Wednesday at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
HoneyHoney, Korey Dane @ The Knitting Factory – L.A’s much-loved alt-folk duo, honeyhoney, have been endearingly dubbed “jazzy,” “twangy,” and “Spaghetti Western” by the best of them. They’ll be hitting up Knitting Factory this week will fellow L.A. folk singer Korey Dane, who’s currently rising on his own tide of dreamy, Long Beach vibes.
Thursdsay
High Waisted @ Mercury Lounge – Our good pals from High Waisted will be cranking out their retro rock & roll at Mercury Lounge this Thursday, with the wonderfully high and/or wasted attitude that has made them a surf-rock staple in the NYC scene. There’s no better time to kick the snow off your boots and join the nonstop beach party these guys have always been on.
The Struts @ Irving Plaza – A badass English band with a passion for classic British rock, a gig with the Stones under their belt, and a penchant for wild live shows? Yeaahh.. count us in.
Friday
Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds @ Brooklyn Bowl – Preparing for the release of their new record in May, this incredible live band will be playing new and old songs alike in the friendly confines of Brooklyn’s favorite bowling alley.
Ra Ra Riot, Sun Club, PWR BTTM @ Webster Hall – On the heels of their brand new release, Need Your Light, Ra Ra Riot will be rocking Webby with their special blend of indie and chamber pop (string section and all). Spotlights will also be on the colorful summer punk of Baltimore’s Sun Club and the sexually-charged garage punk of PWR BTTM.
Saturday
MiniBoone’s Final Show @ Rough Trade – Goodbyes ain’t easy, and that’s exactly why you should catch MiniBoone’s final show at Rough Trade this weekend. After exactly 7 years, 3 months, and 13 days since their first show, the New York rockers have decided to “violently and dramatically disband.” Bid the boys farewell on Saturday.
Sunday
Tal Wilkenfeld @ BB Kings – To say she’s known for her work supporting the likes of Jeff Beck, Herbie Hancock, and Chick Corea is a bit of an understatement – albeit a freaking impressive one. But Tal Wilkenfield has been tearing it up as a skilled bass guitarist and bandleader in her own right. You can see what this jazz and blues master has been up to lately at B.B. King’s this Sunday.
Killswitch Engage @ Gramercy Theatre – If you’re not ending your week with some hardcore heavy metal, you’re missing out on a lovely opportunity. Luckily, you can do it right and catch the one and only Killswitch Engage at Gramercy Theatre this Sunday. (Not a bad way to spend the holy day of rest!)
