COCKTAIL MAGIC NYC 2016

Around 11:45 PM last weekend, at the center of the gorgeous Weylin B. Seymour’s, it occurred to me that tequila may have to become my newest spirit of choice. Sorry, whiskey! This was in no small part due to Nitecap’s “Young Americans,” the deliciously biting, Bowie inspired drink featured at Cocktail Magic. It was a tough choice, but that is my official my blue ribbon winner.

From the moment the doors opened, the space bustled with speakeasy fanatics. Julia Reiner’s name was repeated feverishly throughout the night; one person I spoke to was there exclusively because of her. These people were not playing around with their libations!  Luckily, neither were the bartenders.

William’s and Graham’s “Hey Blackberry” was the perfect blend of smoky and sweet, while Pouring Ribbon’s “Sazerac” was a successful experiment with absinthe. Is absinthe back? I think I’m ok with that, though I was more partial to “Lust For Life,” their mezcal drink with pineapple. It was outstanding and I’m sure Iggy would approve. I’m pleased I finally got to sample some concoctions from O.Gs PDT, Dutch Kills and Death and Company, but can we talk about “Young Americans” again? My god. It’s been days and my mouth is still watering just thinking about that salty/spicy rim.

Roberta’s Pizza was excellent, though a bit slow to come out. I was able to see a bit of Francis Menotti’s show when he stepped outside of the vault. It was entertaining! No chance of me seeing the others, however; the line grew quickly and refused to dwindle. By the time Baio came out to DJ, the crowd was freewheeling and more than ready to dance. All in all, it was a slam dunk of an inaugural event and a fantastic toast to those who love their booze all gussied up.
