PANCAKES AND WHISKEY TEAM UP WITH BUZZCHIPS AT NORTHSIDE FESTIVAL

On June 13, Pancakes and Whiskey co-hosted a Northside special with Buzz Chips at Cameo Gallery. Electronica, lo-fi, alternative dance, and experimental rock marked the evening.

Headliner Nite Jewel stunned the crowd with her unique blend of witty words and infectious beats. Nite Jewel, who hails from Los Angeles, entertained the Northside crowd with her ability to spin typical occurrences—like, say, wanting a lover to stop talking about and start acting upon his or her desire—into something unique. Her songs do just that: sound different, sound Nite Jewel-esque. Songs like “Nowhere to Go” and “In the Dark” have a mystical feel to them. Her voice, of course, only adds to this vibe. Nite Jewel may hit the stage with a keyboard and backtrack, but her voice is a throwback to whiskey-laced jazz. And it makes sense that Nite Jewel’s songs pull from so many different sources. She’s also a mixed media artist who dabbles in visual and sound art.

Nite Jewel was supported by Ejecta, a vocalist with the ability to make a guitar’s string sound ethereal. Like Jewel, Ejecta hit the stage with a backing track and one heavily distorted instrument. Ejecta’s relaxed and modest demeanor onstage is only one part of her repertoire as an artist. She’s deeply fierce in the ideas she puts forth in her songs and music videos.For her indie electro tune “Eleanor Rye,” for instance, Ejecta plays the role of a woman suddenly awakened. She’s naked and unashamed, facing the camera with marked confidence.

Brothertiger, Psychic Twin, and the Great Void hit the stage at Cameo before Nite Jewel and Ejecta. Brothertiger, an experimental synth pop DJ named John Jago, dazzled the audience with cuts off his dreamy 2012 LP, Golden Years. Psychic Twin rejuvenated their studio tracks, “Strangers” and “Dream State.” The Great Void, who started the show, managed to blend electronica and brooding heavy metal.
