The New Regime is the real deal. Ilan Rubin began recording this solo project, supported by his brother Danny Rubin on bass and Hayden Scott on drums, while he was touring and working with Nine Inch Nails and Paramore. Since 2008, the band has toured with Muse, Dead Sara, Gang of Four and now, The Used.
Prior to their shows at PlayStation Theater in New York City (and I’m told prior to most shows), the band “warms up” in the dressing room. Warming up really consists of singing mashups of classic songs like “Ticket to Ride,” “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and “The Way You Make Me Feel.” Hayden plays guitar, Ilan runs point on vocals and Danny backs him up with the harmony. The New Regime’s joy and vigor is just as intoxicating on stage as in warm ups. During “Tap Dancing in a Minefield” the entire crowd was mesmerized by Ilan’s solo as he flew through the cords and added some Led Zeppelin to the bridge. Their performance of “Mannequin” was a little trippy because they were surrounded by naked mannequins that were painted with spoken words. When you watch The New Regime live you sometimes miss the lyrics because you’re so enrapt with the band’s show.

The New Regime was the perfect choice to accompany The Used on tour. There is enough overlap between the band’s energy, performance and lyrical themes to complement The Used, but they are different enough to ensure that The Used fans will experience and appreciate a different form of music. After watching The Used, I finally understood how the band was able to sell out two shows in each city.

There was stomping and singing, jumping and flipping the bird, and a lighting scheme that turned the stage into a war zone. Each time lead singer, Bert McCraken told people to scream, make out, or form a circle pit, the crowd obliged. Bodies were surfing through sweaty hands and security was kicking people out regularly. Times Square may not have ever seen this kind of rowdiness, but it sure needed it.

The New Regime has been supporting The Used on their 15th anniversary tour in the UK, Europe and North America. The Used plays two nights and two albums (Self-Titled on night one and In Love and Death on night two) in each city, though The Observatory in Santa Ana, CA has landed four nights.
