The only thing that goes well with this syrupy, humid, NYC weather? Pancake Picks with extra syrup. We’re serving up some sweet recos so you don’t melt like butter on these hot summer nights. Check out the best shows of the week below!
Monday
Jim Breuer and the Loud & Rowdy @ The Knitting Factory – They had us at loud and rowdy. Let’s face it: indie rock and electro pop are not an endangered species at the moment. That’s why we have to send you to a heavy metal show whenever we get the rare chance. Grab that one metal friend of yours and head out to the Knit tonight for some thrashy fun.
Tuesday
Water Liars @ Rough Trade – This three-piece rock group hailing from Water Valley, Mississippi traces its roots back to the long-running, rowdy St. Louis band, Theodore. Their frontman, Justin Kinkel-Schuster, teamed up with drummer and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bryant for some off-the-cuff recordings that would soon become their first album together as Water Liars.
Holy Fuck + Doomsquad @ MHOW – Toronto-based electronica group Holy Fuck have a different way of doing things. The band is known for their unorthodox use of live instrumentation, miscellaneous instruments, and non-instruments such as toy keyboards and phaser guns to create their sound. They’ll be playing Music Hall of Williamsburg with Doomsquad this Tuesday. (And if you can’t make it, Holy Fuck are also playing the Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday).
Wednesday
Royal Headache, Career Suicide, Warthog @ MHOW – In the mood for a Sydney-based, punk/garage rock band to bang your head to? Well, good news! Royal Headache is playing the Music Hall of Williamsburg this Wednesday, and are sure to whip out some stuff from 2015’s High. Joining them will be fellow punks Career Suicide and Warthog. Get over there!
Ryan Adams and The Shining @ Central Park – Ryan Adams, former member of alternative country band Whiskeytown, just released his latest solo full-length, Heartbreaker, in May. He and his band, The Shining, will be playing Central Park this Wednesday, so enjoy the fresh air and check them out.
DZ Deathrays @ The Knitting Factory – Australian dance-punk duo DZ Deathrays is coming to us all the way from Queensland, and will be playing The Knitting Factory on Wednesday night. Shane Parsons and Simon Ridley, who were initially the founding members of the Brisbane band, Velociraptor, teamed up for the unique project and have been rocking as DZ Deathrays since ’08.
Thursday
Broken Social Scene @ MHOW – Broken Social Scene is not just a Canadian indie rock band; it’s a musical collective that has featured anywhere from 6 to 19 members at a given time. Since anything could happen, we’ve got to send you their way! Head to Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday to see what they’re cooking up now.
Friday
Panorama Festival (Friday-Sunday) – Panorama Fest is finally here! Friday through Sunday will bring us headliners like Arcade Fire, Kendrick Lamar, LCD Soundsystem and a number of other great acts swapping stages on Randall’s Island. Not only that, but we’re giving away tickets! Get on it.
Saturday
Guns N’ Roses @ MetLife Stadium – Do we really need to persuade you? Guns. MetLife. Saturday & Sunday. Go.
Sunday
Nice As Fuck @ Rough Trade – For a nice-as-fuck ending to your week, hit Rough Trade on Sunday to catch this supergroup. Nice As Fuck is the joint effort of Jenny Lewis, Au Revoir Simone’s Erika Forster, and the Like’s Tennessee Thomas. NAF also marks the second supergroup Forster and Thomas have formed in two years, and that chemistry is worth catching at Rough Trade on Sunday.
